SanDisk Corporation will soon be shipping its new third-generation family of solid-state drives the G3 series. The SanDisk G3 family use multi-level cell NAND flash memory technology which makes them roughly five times faster the fastest 7,200 rpm HDDs.

Solid-state drives have no moving or spinning parts hence they are faster then mechanical HDDs, clocking in at 40,000vrpm.

The G3 drives are available in 60, 120 and 240GB and retail for $149, $249, and $499, respectively.

The $149 60 GB will go a long way towards upgrading an older laptop by increasing the drive speed over an older drive. A $149 purchase is much easier to stomach than a $1,500 new notebook.

The Sandisk G3 SSDs will be available in mid 2009.
